From Pescasseroli to Campobasso
112 km in 6 days
Presentation
112 kilometers to discover the tratturi, the large grass roads, which connected the Abruzzo Apennines and the Tavoliere delle Puglie and were traveled by shepherds and their flocks.
In 1447, Alfonso D’Aragona revitalized the roads on which the sheep moved and created a large network of transhumance, the royal tratturi, which had a well-defined width, sixty Neapolitan paces, corresponding to 111 meters. Among these are the Pescasseroli – Candela and the Castel di Sangro – Lucera. Our route follows a stretch of one and then a stretch of the other.
The route takes place on mountain paths in the first part and then on secondary dirt and asphalt roads with little traffic, in the center of the tratturo itself, which being state property cannot be built or sold. The Via del tratturo is a journey into the traditions, culture and religiosity of the people of Molise who have always linked their lives to transhumant pastoralism. It is advisable to have the GPS tracks, which can be downloaded from this site for free.
We have chosen this first stretch from Pescasseroli to Campobasso to introduce you to the world of tratturi, and our first commitment will be to build a network of realities that help keep the path alive. If the project evolves positively, we will think about continuing the path to Puglia, as it was in the old times.
Project born (on an idea by Luca Gianotti) from the collaboration between Compagnia dei Cammini and Ecotur.
